The Carbon County Sheriff's Office confirmed two people died in a fiery crash at the end of a high-speed police chase early Friday near the town of Helper.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Tom Stefanoff said a 911 call of a fight in progress brought police to the Tuscan restaurant, at 23 E. 1st North, in Price, at around 1 a.m.

A deputy arrived within a minute and saw a car leaving the parking lot. The deputy motioned and verbally ordered the driver to stop, but the suspect sped off in a black, super-charged Hemi Dodge type vehicle, narrowly missing a collision with the lawman's cruiser.

Shortly after, a Helper police officer traveling on U.S. 6 saw a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle, which was clocked by radar traveling at 120 mph. The Helper officer, along with the deputy, joined in the pursuit.

The officers lost visual contact with the vehicle as they approached Helper. But after passing Poplar Street, they saw dust off to the side of the road and turned around to investigate.

They found the suspect vehicle had run into a house on River Street, and that both the car and the vacant residence had erupted in flames. Helper and Price fire departments extinguished the fires.

Two dead people were found in the car. Their bodies, burned beyond recognition, were turned over to the state Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies and identification.

Utah Highway Patrol is assisting the sheriff's office in further investigating the case.
