A teenager ran away from Idaho, arrived in Southern Utah with a friend in a stolen pickup and led officers on a high-speed, multi-county chase after stealing another vehicle.

About 9:30 a.m. Thursday, a man arrived at work near 300 S. Main Street in Beaver and parked his Escalade with the keys still in the ignition. A couple of minutes later, the man looked out the window and saw a 17-year-old boy get out of a green Ford pickup — that another teen was driving — and steal his Escalade, said Beaver County Sheriff's Lt. Cody Black.

The man called police as both the Escalade and the pickup took off southbound.

A Beaver County Sheriff's deputy caught up with the vehicles soon after they merged onto southbound Interstate 15, about five miles south of Beaver. The deputy tried to get the driver of the Escalade to stop, but the driver sped up and led the deputy on a high-speed pursuit, Black said. At one point, the Escalade's speed reached about 110 mph.

Troopers joined the chase while Cedar City police set up spikes about 15 miles south of Beaver, at an exit for Panguitch. But the Escalade exited the freeway and got back on, going around the spike strip, Black said.

Parowan officers set up a second spike strip near Parowan, which successfully deflated two of the Escalade's tires. The driver kept going for a couple miles before coming to a stop, where officers took him into custody without further incident, Black said.

While Black and other officers were discussing how to find the Ford pickup, it happened to drive by, he said. An officer followed and stopped the pickup about a mile farther down the highway. The driver, an 18-year-old man, was also taken into custody.

The younger teen was booked into the Iron County Detention Facility on suspicion of numerous felonies. The 18-year-old was booked into the Beaver County jail. Investigators believe the two are friends.

Black noted that when he and a trooper approached the pickup, it smelled strongly of burnt marijuana. Investigators are looking into whether the teens were under the influence.

As it turned out, the 17-year-old was reported as a runaway out of Idaho, and the pickup the two were in was also reported stolen on Wednesday, Black said.
