Iriving, Texas • The Dallas Cowboys have released Michael Sam from the practice squad, another setback as the NFL's first openly gay player tries to make an active roster during the regular season for the first time.

Sam was signed to Dallas' practice squad on Sept. 3, four days after he was among the final cuts by the St. Louis Rams at the end of the preseason.

The Rams drafted Sam late in the seventh round of the NFL draft in May. The former SEC defensive player of the year at Missouri was pick No. 249 out of 256.

In releasing Sam on Tuesday, the Cowboys added linebacker Troy Davis of Central Florida and defensive tackle Ken Bishop of Northern Illinois to their practice squad.

Dolphins' Jordan back after suspension

Davie, Fla. • Defensive end Dion Jordan has rejoined the Miami Dolphins rested, recharged and ready to start his season after a forced layoff.

The 2013 first-round draft pick sat out the first six games without pay for twice violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. With his suspension lifted, Jordan returned to practice Tuesday and might be activated for Sunday's game at Jacksonville.

Jordan said he made a mistake and learned a lesson. He was first suspended July 3 after testing positive for a prohibited stimulant. As the Dolphins were notified Sept. 19 that his suspension was lifted, they were advised of a second suspension. Jordan, who was allowed to take part in the exhibition season, said he's unsure whether he'll play this week.

Around the league

Buccaneers • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed receiver and return man Trindon Holliday and promoted defensive end T.J. Fatinikun from the practice squad to the active roster.

To make room for the additions, the team waived receiver Solomon Patton and defensive end Scott Solomon on Tuesday.

Colts • Colts receiver Reggie Wayne says he's still waiting for MRI results on his injured left elbow.

During his weekly radio show Tuesday, Wayne told WNDE listeners he would do everything in his power to play Sunday at Pittsburgh. Colts coach Chuck Pagano told reporters Monday that Wayne was having an MRI on his injured arm. The Colts (5-2) were off Monday and Tuesday after routing Cincinnati 27-0 for their fifth straight win.

Wayne says he was hurt during the first quarter when he landed awkwardly, noting that it didn't "feel right." He finished the game wearing a sleeve on his arm and iced the elbow afterward. Wayne had four catches for 15 yards, becoming the ninth member of the NFL's 14,000-yard club.

Jets • Jeremy Kerley always figured he'd stay right where he is.The New York Jets made sure the reliable wide receiver didn't go anywhere, signing Kerley to a four-year contract extension on Tuesday. Kerley, a fifth-round draft pick in 2011 out of TCU, was due to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Panthers • The Panthers announced they've released longtime defensive back Charles Godfrey and signed guard Chris Scott. Godfrey joined the Panthers as a third-round draft pick in 2008. He's played in 82 games and had 75 starts.

Washington • Washington has signed linebacker Everette Brown and placed linebacker Brian Orakpo on injured reserve. Brown has appeared in 38 NFL games with three starts with the Carolina Panthers, San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys. He played in seven games with the Cowboys last season and had one sack. —
