Travel reading

Backroads of Utah

By Theresa Husarik,

160-page paperback,

$21.95, Voyageur Press

This book, with the man-made arch/tunnel in Red Canyon on Highway 12 gracing its cover, is designed as a guidebook and eye candy of Utah's scenery. Well illustrated with maps and color photos, the book suggests driving tours in Utah's West Desert, northern Utah, northeastern Utah, southwestern Utah, southcentral Utah and southeastern Utah. The emphasis, as the title suggests, is on backroads tours of ghost towns, historical sites, scenic byways and scenery. Colored maps with suggested routes are particularly helpful to those exploring Utah. The color photos give those considering a drive a sense of place, and there are some good sidebars such as "Safety in Desert Country" or "Orderville Tries the Communal Lifestyle." The backmatter includes suggested reading and helpful Utah Web sites.
