Posted: 8:50 AM- PROVO -- The endangered June sucker fish will soon have a little more room to roam.
The Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission says it will reconstruct part of the Fort Field diversion dam, which sits about four miles up the Provo River from where the river feeds into Utah Lake.
The project would free up an additional 1.1 miles of spawning grounds for the fish. That would help a population that has been listed as endangered since 1986. The June sucker is known to inhabit only Utah Lake and the Provo River.
The commission has not set a date for the reconstruction. It estimates the project would also benefit other species during upstream migration.
