West Valley » The Idaho Steelheads rode a three-goal third period to a 5-3 victory over the Utah Grizzlies Saturday night at the E Center. Aston Rome scored a power play goal at 16:07 in the third period, giving the Steelheads the lead. Minutes later, Brendan Minamow sent a puck three-fourths of the way down the ice into an empty net at 18:59 to salt the win away.
"We got a couple of great chances and we didn't capitalize, and that's how the game goes sometimes," Utah coach Kevin Colley said.
The Grizzlies outshot the Steelheads for the second straight night in a losing effort, this time 33-23. In the third period alone, Utah produced 13 shots, but Idaho scored three goals on seven attempts.
Utah entered the third period leading 3-2 after Ryan Kinasewich scored a pair of goals, the first making him the all-time leading scorer in Grizzlies history. Kinasewich's wrister from the right side of the net appeared to be saved, before it slid into the back of the net, giving him 112 for his career and the record. Just more than two minutes later, Kinasewich added to his total off of assists by Dustin Friesen and Matt Caria.
"It was a nice honor, but I wish I could have celebrated with a win," Kinasewich said.
Utah led the Steelheads 3-2 in the second period before falling apart.
"It came down to the third period, and we made a couple of mental mistakes," Kinasewich said.
