Food and garden briefs: Tell Harmon's why dad deserves a steak

Sons and daughters of all ages can nominate their fathers for the "My Dad Deserves Steak" contest at Harmon's Grocery Stores. Each store location will select one winner to receive prizes worth more than $300, including a barbecue grill and pack of rib-eye steaks. Entry forms will be accepted through June 18. Winners will be contacted in time for a Father's Day, June 21.

Cobbler like Mom's

For those who crave fruit cobbler -- but don't want to make it themselves-- Jason's Infamous Cobbler, of Salt Lake City, might be the answer. Owner Jason Tolbert has recently started selling this favorite comfort-food dessert -- using his mother's recipes --- online at www.bestpeachcobbler.com. A pan of peach cobbler, which serves 12 to 15 people, cost $22. An apple cobbler of the same size is $25. The cobbler can be eaten cold, room temperature or reheated. Several coffee shops and restaurants in the Salt Lake Valley also are serving individual-size portions of the Jason's cobbler for about $2.50. Details are on the Web site.

Mainstream sushi

The 13 Dan's, Macey's and Dick's grocery stores along the Wasatch Front are now carrying fresh sushi and salads from Hayai Zushi, the new drive-through restaurant opened recently by master sushi chef Peggi Whiting. The stores will carry the Mars Roll, Pink Power Roll, California Roll, Jazz Roll, seaweed salad, squid salad and edamame.

Urban chickens

Learn chicken-care basics during the June 24 "Urban Chickens" course being sponsored by Wasatch Community Gardens. Attendees will learn about local regulations, coops, breeds and all other fowl-related issues. Class begins at 7 p.m. at the Grateful Tomato Garden, 800 S. 600 East, Salt Lake City. Chef Shamy's goodies

Chef Shamy Gourmet foods, based in Utah, has recently launched a new line of cooking sauces, soups, dessert toppings and savory "saute butters" infused with spices. The products are available at most Smith's, Harmons, Macey's, Dan's and Associated Foods stores in Utah. They also are sold online at chefshamy.com. Prices range from $5 to $7 for 9 to 16 ounce containers.

Ultimate grilling contest

Author and master griller Steven Raichlen is looking for the next big recipe phenomenon, one that rivals the popular beer-can chicken or planked salmon.
