A piping hot bowl of soup and a sandwich filled with melted cheese -- it's hard to top a classic duo like this. But Oasis Café's version ($8.20) adds roasted fennel puree to the soup. The result: a subtle anise echo in the tangy, thick-ish tomato soup that sets it apart from its numerous counterparts. The crustless sandwich comes with grill marks that are sometimes the result of proper toasting and other times merely cosmetic. It's hard to dismiss the nursery comforts of oozing cheese and a good bowl of soup.
Oasis Café is at 151 S. 500 East, Salt Lake City; 801-322-0404. Hours are Sunday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
