Legwear is in. With temperatures dropping, leggings, tights and stockings are among the options to move your waredrobe from summer to winter.
"It has to do with the skinny jeans, which are really popular, too, and are good for this time of year," said Kristina Stromness, stylist and manager at Lola Bella boutique at The Gateway in Salt Lake City. "It's also a way to transition some of your summer pieces -- with the leggings and the tights."
The look can be found in all styles and colors, from basic dark opaque colors to more fun bright or animal print styles. Stromness said the most popular and flattering picks tend to be dark colors; they are more versatile and provide the most coverage.
A more daring option is a leathery look. More conservative types can go with dark colors or a diamond print or legging-style pant, which provide more discreet coverage for the rear.
If some of these brands would put too big a dent in your wallet, budget-conscious shoppers can find look-alikes at large department stores like Macy's, Kohls and JC Penney. The No nonsense brand, for example, offers sleek opaques, sheer and textured tights at affordable prices. Another affordable option for leggings is athletic wear, Stromness said. Layering thinner tights can also create the look.
Crystal Fambrini, stylist at South Towne Mall, said anyone can wear the look regardless of age and size.
"Everyone is looking for a way to stay warm. The layered look on top has been popular, now it's layering on the bottom," Fambrini said.
This year, tights are available in bold colors.
"This is an affordable way to make a statement... everyone is thinking how they can get the best out of their money," she said.
When wearing bold leggings or tights, keep tops simple with a neutral monochrome garment. Pair leggings with more flowing tops, bigger jackets or dresses. As for shoes, tights, leggings and skinny jeans all look great with pumps, ballet flats and just about any kind of boot. If you're thinking about a tall boot, choose one with buckles or zippers. With short boots, you can wear them with socks over the leggings.
So, forget the nude pantyhose: Find the color, texture or patterned tight or legging that suits your personality and style.
