"Our mother really wanted us to do this," said lead vocalist Merrill Osmond of Olive, the family matriarch, who died in 2004. "The family got together to look at our priorities. This has been in the works for several years."
After 50 years in show business, Utah's first family of pop music are a cultural draw again, as indicated by Marie's long run last fall on the popular TV reality show "Dancing with the Stars." Currently, the family is touring Europe on an anniversary tour, which includes two sold-out concerts in London's Wembley Stadium. As part of the tour, the family has teamed up with Utah's GeneTree.com, a family networking Web site, to meet long-lost relatives. Concertgoers are invited to look at the Osmonds family tree on the free Web site, or take a $149 DNA test to see if they're related.
Donny, 50, and Marie, 48, will perform together in mid-July at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Hotel, before the siblings begin an extended engagement in September at the Flamingo.
The duo will join with the rest of the family to perform with the Tabernacle Choir at the LDS Conference Center on July 25 and 26. Tickets are free, but concertgoers must register at www.lds.org/events between midnight tonight and June 2 at 11:59. You can also register by calling 801-570-0080 or 1-866-LDS-TIKS. All registrations received during that time period will be entered into a random lottery.
"The members of this wonderful musical family are true pioneers, not only as Latter-Day Saints in the entertainment business, but also as landmark recording and performing artists and so they are a great fit for this concert," said Mack Wilberg, choir music director, in a press release.
The Osmonds have performed at presidential inaugerations and sung on stages all over the world, but this hometown gig is a big deal, Merrill Osmond said.
"If you would have told me a year ago about all this, I wouldn't have believed you," the singer said in a phone interview. "We're all shaking our heads."
