REI's popular and free Kids Passport to Adventure program starts May 19 at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek.
The program encourages families to get out and hike or bike with their children. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes free basic bicycle checks, bike-safety talks, helmet demonstrations, information about local rides and hikes, access to the climbing wall, a reading tent with outdoor-themed books and live native Utah animals, as well as the Passport to Adventure program signup booth.
Participants receive a journal with five entries. Once a child has completed a combination of three hikes or bike rides they can return to REI after Sept. 1 to get the passport stamped and get a certificate for a prize.
