'The Race to Save a Dream' to screen at Olympic Park

The Alf Engen Museum at Utah Olympic Park is holding a free screening of the film "114 Days: The Race to Save a Dream" on Tuesday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. The movie chronicles the story of 2005 World Cup Skeleton champion Noelle Pikus-Pace, who overcame a freak accident with a bobsled that left her with a double-compound fracture of a bone in her left leg. Her career appeared over, but Pikus-Pace vowed to make it back in time for the 2006 Winter Olympics, just 114 days after the accident.

"Anomaly" at Brewvies

Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center is showing the ski movie "Anomaly" from Teton Gravity Research on Dec. 7 at Brewvies, 677 S. 200 West, with 7 and 9 p.m. showings. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Utah Avalanche Center. Call 801-365-5522 for more information.

Ski and gear swap

Alta Community Enrichment is holding a ski and gear swap Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows in Alta. Gear can be dropped off Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. or Saturday between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. A charge of $1 per item will be charged to display your gear. Cedar Breaks closure

The section of Highway 148 through Cedar Breaks National Monument has been closed for the winter. The portion of Highway 143 that allows travel between Panguitch and Brian Head will remain open throughout the winter. Cedar Breaks remains open for snowmobilers and cross country skiers.

Free REI Clinics

Learn about the wildlife tracks in the winter from naturalist Bruce Thompson on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek. Thompson will present a slide show and talk about how animals have adapted for winter.

Dynastar athlete Jeannie Thoren will talk about women-specific gear in the first of this two-part clinic Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store. A chance to sign up for the second part, where women will be fitted with personalized skis, will be offered during the first session.

The Utah Avalanche Center's "Know Before You Go: Intro to Avalanche Awareness" presentation will be the Dec. 7 clinic at the Sandy store, 10600 S. 230 West. Learn about the risks of skiing and snowboarding in the backcountry. You'll learn how to recognize avalanche terrain and obvious signs of instability, safe travel practices, basics of avalanche rescue equipment and self-rescue procedures, and where to obtain information about current avalanche conditions. The clinic starts at 7 p.m.

Kennedy lecture

Environmental activist and author Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will speak at Westminster College on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory at Westminster College, 1250 E. 1700 South. Kennedy will address the role played by natural surroundings in Americans' work, health and identify.

Kennedy's lecture will explain how good environmental policy is good business policy and detail little-known environmental abuses sanctioned by governments as well as his own and other attorneys' confrontations with environmental lawbreakers.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Westminster College Campus Concierge Desk in the Shaw Center, as well as from local REI stores, the Patagonia Outlet and Sam Weller's Zion Bookstore. Proceeds will benefit the Great Salt Lakekeeper.

Kennedy is the author of Crimes Against Nature, The Riverkeepers and numerous newspaper and magazine articles.
