Fly on over to Bird Center celebration

The Wild Bird Center in Layton is celebrating its fifth anniversary Oct. 14. Events include a demonstration by HawkWatch International from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The raptors scheduled to appear include a bald eagle, great horned owl, red-tailed hawk and Swainson's hawk. The Great Salt Lake and Wasatch chapters of the Audubon Society, Utah Nature Conservancy, Division of Wildlife Resources, Farmington Bay Nature Center and Bear River National Migratory Refuge will also be at the store with exhibits.

The celebration lasts from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wild Bird Center, 1860 N. 1000 West, in the Layton Market Center. Call 801-525-8400 for more information.

Howl Fest, chili cook-off

Wolf Mountain in Eden is holding the second annual Howl Fest and Chili Cook-off Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With the theme "Welcome to Winter," the event includes the Utah State Chili Cook-Off, a pumpkin roll (1 p.m.), pumpkin launch (2:30 p.m.) and ongoing pumpkin bowling. Jordan River cleanup

Stonefly Society meeting

The Stonefly Society of the Wasatch, Trout Unlimited's Salt Lake-based chapter, is holding a fly-tying demonstration from Robert Williamson on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake County Fish and Game meeting house. Williamson, author of Innovative Fly Tying Techniques, will be showing his famous woven mayfly and stonefly patterns.

Goblin Valley programs

Rangers at Goblin Valley State Park near Hanksville are holding an evening walk Friday at 7:30 to help visitors discover the wonder of the park. Meet at the Observation Point shelter.

A Junior Ranger program regarding the wildlife of Goblin Valley State Park is Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Observation Point shelter. The program is geared for children ages 6-12, but everyone is invited to attend.

A theater program, "LifeƂstyles of the Dry and Dusty," will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the park's amphitheater.

Fall Nature Trail hike

Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway is holding a fall nature trail hike Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the campground office. A ranger will lead the 2.6-mile, round-trip hike on the Pine Creek Nature Trail and talk about why leaves change color and what animals and plants do to prepare for the winter. Snowbird sport swap

The 27th annual Snowbird Ski and Sport Swap is Friday through Sunday on Level 2 of the Snowbird Center. The swap is a way to buy or sell used and new equipment and raise money for the Snowbird Sports Education Foundation. Twenty percent of all sales are donated to the nonprofit group, dedicated to athletic training and development of Utah children and young adults.

The swap opens at noon Friday and ends at 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family on Friday. Admission is free on Saturday and Sunday.
