DWR holds Raptor Watch Day on Saturday

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) officials are holding a free Raptor Watch Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Orem Overlook along the Squaw Peak Road, accessed from Provo Canyon. Migrating raptors pass the overlook during their annual autumn flight south. DWR employees will help identify passing raptors and answer questions about the migration.

Nature creep

Friends of Great Salt Lake are holding a free "nature creep" on Oct. 7 to search for birds, tiger beetles and pickleweed in the Lee Creek Natural Area on the south shore of the Great Salt Lake. Westminster College biology professor Ty Harrison will lead the event from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lee Creek, part of the National Audubon's South Shore Preserve. 4-wheelers volunteer

The Utah 4 Wheel Drive Association and its 22 affiliate clubs will be hosting volunteer work events at 12 sites across the state Saturday as part of National Public Lands Day events. The main event will take place in American Fork Canyon, with trash removal, trail repairs and fence building scheduled. Representatives of Tread Lightly and State Parks and Recreation also will participate. Free day at Jordanelle

State Parks employees at the Rock Cliff Nature Center and Jordanelle State Park are holding a free event Saturday collecting the bristly plant teasel and making fall crafts, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 435-782-3030 for more information.

Fall Family Fest

The Park City Ice Arena & Sports Complex is the site for the inaugural Fall Family Fest on Oct. 7 to raise money for the "Snow & Ice" scholarship fund. The fest runs from noon to 6 p.m. and includes a chili cook-off with amateur and professional chefs, free ice skating, sports demonstrations, and games and other activities for children. Anne Fortney and Joel Fine started the scholarship to help elementary-age schoolchildren who might not otherwise get the chance to try various winter sports.

The cost is $10 per car, $5 per person or $2 per bike and includes a barbecue, chili and drinks. Parents will also be able to sign children up for 13 winter sports programs, from ski jumping to sled hockey. Adopt-a-Crag

The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance is holding an Adopt-a-Crag volunteer work project at the Salt Lake Slips Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will be building a series of stone terraces at the base of the Salt Lake Slips and working on the trail that approaches the crag from the Storm Mountain Picnic Area. Free REI clinics

Navigation experts are offering "GPS 201: Beyond the Basics" clinics tonight at the Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South, and Tuesday at the Salt Lake store 3285 E. 3300 South, in Millcreek. The clinics, which start at 7 p.m., will cover more advanced Global Positioning System functions such as a computer interfacing, manual entry of waypoints and more.

Professional climber Chris Lindner will present a slide show and video of epic climbing in Patagonia on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store.
