Grade: B+

Smooth, funky, steeped in R&B and never disappointing, "Songs and Stories" is a testament to a great artist, George Benson, who has simply become better with age. Bass giant Marcus Miller produced the album, and one can't escape his influences, either. However, starting with the sweet, sensual "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," the lyrical album is pure Benson. "Rainy Night In Georgia" recalls "Breezin'." There are few artists who are able to blend R&B with jazz -- and soul -- seamlessly. "Songs and Stories" won't satisfy critics who say Benson should focus on one genre, but the rest of us will simply enjoy an artist at work.
