Abstract passion
Salt Lake City painter Jerry E. Hardesty is known for plein air landscape paintings usually rendered in oil. For his upcoming exhibition "Sorpresa," however, he's transferred his talents to the abstract realm, trading oil for acrylic. The results are full of arresting vibrancy and playful tones. "I have been labeled a 'neo-abstract expressionist," he states in his press materials. "Abstract painting has become my passion. It allows me to express my love of color and texture -- to paint with freedom -- to discover my inner soul."

A shutter runs through it
It's the desert river few Salt Lake Valley denizens know about, unless you live by the Jordan River. Tillman Crane, who shoots only with large-format cameras, has made this urban river the focus of his latest exhibition, "Reawakened Beauty," which collects 30 platinum prints that cover its every aspect, from source to mouth. Even if by chance you have explored this river as thoroughly as Crane, chances are you're not as good a photographer as he is. That's two good reasons not to miss this exhibition.
When » Artist's reception with talk by Crane, Oct. 16, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Exhibition runs through Jan. 9, 2010. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 11a.m.-6 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.
