Unitarian Universalists donate $30,000 to Utah Pride Center
Unitarian Universalists who gathered in Salt Lake City for a national general assembly last week donated nearly $30,000 to the Utah Pride Center, according to a news release.
The Utah Pride Center supports lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youths, adults and families through a variety of programs.
The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations sponsored a "prom for all" during its five-day assembly and donated proceeds from its Sunday service collection to the Pride Center.
Valerie Larabee, executive director of the Utah Pride Center, said LGBT youths are marginalized, disenfranchised and at risk.
"The generosity of the UUA will strengthen our efforts to preserve Utah families and create safe and affirming environments for LGBT youth as they journey into adulthood," Larabee said in the news release.
The Pride Center will increase its statewide outreach and training for those who work with young people and will open its youth drop-in center one additional day each week, for a total of five days, the news release said.
