Hollywood has a long history of casting that ignores the calendar, and there's a particularly prominent example of that in "24: Legacy" (7 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13).

Jimmy Smits stars as Sen. John Donovan, who is running for president. Gerald McRaney plays his father, Henry.

Smits was born on July 9, 1955; McRaney was born on Aug. 19, 1947. Which him less than eight years older than his TV son.

Actually, it pretty much works — not because McRaney looks older than his 69 years, but because Smits looks younger than 61.

And both of them play big parts in the big plot twists in tonight's episode of "24."
