The lives and loves of two best friends are explored in a web series teased in today's "Trailer of the Day" for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

"The Chances" focuses on best friends Kate and Michael, played by the show's creators and writers, Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman. They are working to maintain their long-standing friendship through the changes in their lives — with Kate newly married, and Michael trying to get over his ex-boyfriend.

Also, Kate and Michael are both deaf.

"We created the show because deaf characters, in television and film, are often solely defined by that very trait," Stern and Feldman wrote in a statement on the show's website. "As a result they're not fully realized or three-dimensional, which sucks because characters, like people, are very boring if they are only one thing. With our show, we want to introduce the world to deaf characters written by deaf people, who lead intersectional lives that are complicated, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking, but never defined solely by their deafness."

"The Chances," directed by Anna Kerrigan, will be previewed in the festival's Special Events section, in the Short Form Episodic Showcase along with two other shows: "Gente-fied" (which was previewed in this space two weeks ago) and "Strangers." The festival will show five episodes of "The Chances," with a Q&A with the creators and director.

The Short Form Episodic Showcase will screen at the following times and venues:

• Monday, Jan. 23, 11 a.m., Egyptian Theatre, Park City.

• Wednesday, Jan. 25, 6 p.m., Tower Theatre, Salt Lake City.

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 19-29 in Park City and at venues in Salt Lake City and the Sundance resort in Provo Canyon.
