A Cottonwood Heights man died in a crash involving two motorcycles Wednesday on Interstate 15 at Beck Street.

Matthew L. Nichol, 36, and Mark Ross, 52, were traveling south together on I-15 when Nichol lost control of his bike and crashed, Utah Highway Patrol troopers wrote in a press statement. Ross tried to brake and swerve but apparently struck Nichol, troopers said.

Nichol died at the scene and Ross was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition, according to UHP. Neither man was wearing a helmet, though Nichol had one strapped to his bike, troopers said.

Both men were from Cottonwood Heights.

Crews cleared the scene and opened all lanes of traffic about 5:30 p.m.
