The man who was shot during a confrontation with officers inside the West Valley City Police Department lobby had been facing the prospect of domestic violence charges.
James Ramsey Kammeyer, 39, was allegedly in a domestic dispute with his wife Sunday evening, according to a West Jordan police news release. Police submitted the report to city prosecutors to screen for charges on Monday, the same day Kammeyer reportedly walked into the police department lobby, pulled a gun and pointed it at officers.
Several officers, hearing that an armed man was in the lobby, immediately reacted and one shot him twice in the right arm. He was treated at a hospital and was later booked at the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of two counts of attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, possession of a weapon by a restricted person and making terroristic threats, said West Valley City police Sgt. Jason Hauer.
Investigators suspect he may have been trying to commit "suicide by cop."
He has not been charged for the incident at the police station, but Kammeyer was charged Thursday in West Jordan Justice Court with criminal mischief and two counts of commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child, stemming from the alleged domestic dispute. All of those charges are class B misdemeanors.
