MOTUS After Dark is opening a new season of informal late-night performances in nontraditional venues. The first of four planned dates is Friday at The Red Door in downtown Salt Lake City; on the roster are violinists David Porter and Alex Martin, violist Joel Gibbs, cellist Walter Haman, bassist Ted Merritt, clarinetists Erin Svoboda and Lee Livengood, and bassoonist Leon Chodos. They'll play single movements and short pieces by Penderecki, Ravel, Borodin, Brahms, Poulenc and Bach. (Porter, the series' mastermind, promised that every MOTUS After Dark this year will include Bach — "a Bach-analia, if you will.")

"I love playing large-scale works and the rush of applause from large audiences afterward," Svoboda said. "I also love the intricacy, nuance and intimacy of playing smaller works with a smaller audience in a bar setting."
