Park City » The adage that freaks come out at night applied to the Feist concert at Deer Valley Resort Thursday night.

Schizophrenia was exhibited by both the pop artist and the crowd, as a sluggish start to the Canadian musician's set was matched by a sluggish, quiet crowd. But when the sun went down, as Feist and her band launched a spirited version of her minor hit, "I Feel It All," hundreds of people rushed to the stage and stayed on their feet throughout the rest of the night.

Even Feist seemed surprised by the suddenly energized crowd, and admitted that she had to reach deep back into her catalog to play uptempo songs that would keep the crowd dancing. "We were planning on rolling," Feist told the crowd. "Now we're rocking."

Feist, the 32-year-old singer and guitarist who was once a member of Broken Social Scene, entered the public eye last year when her version of "1,2,3,4" was shown in an omnipresent TV ad for the iPod. Suddenly a star, in April, Feist won a Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy) as "Single of the Year."

In Park City, the night got off to an ominous start after opener Golden Dogs finished a short set. A venue official came to the stage to tell the crowd that the show wouldn't start until Feist felt it was dark enough.

Feist finally came to the stage a few minutes before 9 p.m. by herself, saying that she came out to kill time until the sun went down. She played an electric guitar that was about as big as she was. Her performance was a bit underwhelming, yet she showed off a gorgeous voice remarkably similar to Bjork's eccentric but dazzling vocal tones.

With the moon still hiding behind the mountains at the beautiful venue, Feist interrupted her set after two songs to exhort the audience to pipe up, mock-complaining that the crowd was too busy sipping wine and eating quail eggs to get into the show.

She shouldn't have worried. Once she played more uptempo songs, including "My Moon, My Man" and "1,2,3,4," the crowd woke up. One of the night's visual and vocal highlights was a blazing, extended version of "Sea Lion Women" with the Golden Dogs back on stage with Feist, all the musicians howling at the moon.
