Out & About: Salt Lake City Jazz Festival, Good Charlotte, plus Wynton Marsalis kicks off Red Butte Garden concert series

Salt Lake City Jazz Festival

The festival begins at 5:30 p.m. today with the Great Basin Street Band. Two of this year's highlights are the E Family with Sheila E and Pete and Juan Escovedo, at 9:50 p.m. on the Ellington Stage; and Ellis Hall & The Truth, featuring saxophonist Mindi Abair. Abair just released her new CD, "Stars," which debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart. Her 2006 release "Life Less Ordinary" was her breakthrough, which debuted at the top of the same chart.

Founders Title Co. Folk & Bluegrass Festival

Folk-rocking singer-songwriter Lori McKenna's 8 p.m. show kicks off this annual festival, and the lineup also includes the Sam Bush Band, Tim O'Brien, the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band and Carrie Rodriguez. Be sure to catch Cherryholmes, a family act, Saturday at 9 p.m.

Wynton Marsalis with Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra

The first scheduled concert for the new and improved amphitheater at Red Butte Garden features jazz legends who aren't playing the Salt Lake City Jazz Festival. Nine-time Grammy winner Wynton Marsalis is the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and is the first artist to win classical and jazz Grammys in the same year. He will be joined by 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players from the Lincoln Center.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

The Davis Arts Council's "Summer Nights with the Stars" concert series continues with the band that reignited the swing sound in the 1990s with hits like "Go Daddy-O" and "You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight." The band plays the Sandy Amphitheater the next night.

Jon Schmidt

Schmidt is a Salt Lake City pianist and entertainer who describes his style as "New Age classical."

RISE! Dance Music Festival

This eight-hour festival features nonstop dance music from acts including the Starkillers, Jeremy Dawson of Shiny Toy Guns and Scooter & Lavelle.

Good Charlotte

Before the Madden twins because famous for dating Paris Hilton and impregnating Nicole Richie, the boys led the power-pop band Good Charlotte to success with songs like "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," "The Anthem" and "Dance Floor Anthem (I Don't Want to Be in Love)." Boys Like Girls and Metro Station are also on the bill. Trivia: Metro Station features Miley Cyrus' brother Trace and "Hannah Montana" co-star Michael Musso's brother Mason.

Kohabit

Steve Keen and Kelly Eisenhour

Catch one of Kelly Eisenhour's final Utah performances (she's moving to take a teaching job in Washington) in this concert presented by Jazz Piano Artists of Utah.

"The Stage Dives Across America Tour" lands in Hyrum with national artists Endwell, The Ghost Inside, Stray from the Path and Broadcast the Nightmare, as well as local acts 12 Ton Jezus and Myrzah.

Valient Thorr

Valient Thorr is a hard-rock band with heavy classic rock influences, and just released a new record, "Immortalizer" - the band's fourth in five years - after Valient underwent transplant surgery to donate a kidney to his ailing father.
