Music notes: Utah Symphony will even the score on Bach's Brandenburg concertos

After performing Bach's odd-numbered Brandenburg concertos in January, the Utah Symphony evens the score Thursday. Assistant conductor David Cho will lead the chamber orchestra in Nos. 2, 4 and 6 from the set in an 8 p.m. concert at Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Featured are trumpeter Jeff Luke, flutist Erich Graf, concertmaster Ralph Matson, flutist Lisa Byrnes and oboist Robert Stephenson. Tickets are $25-$35; call 801-355-ARTS.

WSU alums: The Weber State University Alumni Singers perform Monday at 6:30 and 8 p.m. in the Allred Theater, Browning Center for the Performing Arts, Ogden. On the bill is a variety of music including "What a Wonderful World," "Imagine," "Over the Rainbow" and "Seasons of Love." Evelyn Harris will conduct. Youth all-stars: Utah Symphony assistant conductor David Cho leads 60 of the state's best young musicians in a concert with the Utah Symphony Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City. On the program are Borodin's "Overture to Prince Igor" and "Polovetsian Dances" as well as Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2. Eighteen-year-old Song Choi from Alta High will join the orchestra to play Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Tickets are $6 to $17; call 801-355-ARTS or visit www.arttix.org.

Classical meets jazz: The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation will sponsor a concert featuring classical pianist Simon Tedeschi and jazz pianist Kevin Hunt on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Utah's Libby Gardner Concert Hall, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City. The two will perform "I Want to Play Like Him," blending both genres into one piece. The title of the piece came about when Tedeschi and Hunt, originally from Australia, met while on tour with Larry Adler, the "American maestro of the mouth organ," and told each other, "I wish I could play like you," according to a news release from the Bachauer foundation. Also on the bill are works from Dmitri Shostakovich, Fats Waller, Frédéric Chopin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and many others. Ballam's ballads for the blind: Utah Council for the Blind presents "Songs of Hope" featuring Michael Ballam Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple, 650 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Tickets are $10 to $20 at 801-355-ARTS or at the door. All proceeds will benefit the blind or visually impaired.

Putting on 'Aires': The Salt Lake Symphonic Choir will perform "Aires in Paires" Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Libby Gardner Concert Hall, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City. Michael Huff will conduct. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information, visit www.saltlake symphonicchoir.org.

At the movies: Salt Lake Symphony closes its season with "Music & Film Pops II: The Sequel" Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City. The orchestra will perform a mix of classical music used in film and music written specifically for film, including the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Barber's "Adagio for Strings" (as heard in "Platoon") and selections from "Ben-Hur," "The Wizard of Oz," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and more. For the vets: The Choral Arts Society of Utah, under the direction of Sterling Poulson, and the Utah National Guard 23rd Army Band will give a performance honoring World War II veterans Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Murray Park Amphitheater, 296 E. Murray Park Lane, Murray. The program includes Sousa marches and the traditional "Battle Hymn of the Republic," as well as a selection of Broadway favorites and Big Band swing tunes. On the Square: The LDS Church continues its free Temple Square concerts at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall.

* Friday, Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Benjamin Winkler, performs "Cowboy Up!" as well as pieces by John Williams, Aaron Copland, Bill Holcombe and Richard Rodgers.

* Saturday, pianist Brady Allred, soprano Carol Ann Allred and pianist Laurel Enke will perform "Families Making Music." The concert will showcase the Allred daughters Loren, Megan, Brennan and Karin, as well as violinist Blythe Enke and trumpeter Peter Margulies. The group consists of over 40 members from along the Wasatch Front.
