Lee Hass, of West Jordan, collects and restores sports memorabilia, mostly vintage baseball gloves. Here's what he wrote about his hobby: "I began collecting baseball cards in the late 1970s along with my four children. I would look at some of the pictures and think how fun it would be to own one of those old, fat baseball gloves, the ones without laces. One day I accidentally found one at a thrift store and bought it. The glove was very dirty and in need of repairs, so I cleaned and conditioned it. It turned out to be a U.S. government-issued World War II fielder's glove. Before long it was in good enough shape to play catch with my son. I was hooked! "I find items in antique shops, at thrift stores and of course on the Internet. . . . For me, a part of the fun is the hunt. At times I may go months between finds and then there are the good days as I had recently where I found two great gloves in the same store. Nothing compares to bringing home an old, stiff, smelly glove and transforming it into one of the family. Last year I took one of my split-finger, laceless baseball gloves to a Bees game. A very hot foul ball was hit right at me. I stuck that old Leo Durocher-style mitt up and. . . . No, I didn't catch the ball. In fact, the hard smash about ripped my hand off. How did those old-time athletes play so well with the inferior equipment they used?"
