A.A. Bondy
Show of the week » A.A. Bondy was once known as Scott Bondy and the leader of the alt-rock band Verbena, and Foo Fighter Dave Grohl produced one of the band's albums. But then something happened, he said in a Tribune interview: "I knew I didn't want to do the same thing." So over the next few years, he delved into the music that really spoke to him -- alt-country -- and recast himself as A.A. Bondy, a strikingly honest folk artist who seems to have been born in a coal mine. His recent album "When the Devil's Loose" was one of 2009's best, maintaining a sense of foreboding without striking a false note. The soft-spoken young man said he changes when he is about to hit the stage. "There's some internal chemical process that takes place," he said. "I don't have to light any candles or turn out the lights." Will Sartain will open.
