This week's top choices

Lecture » The formidable Devra Lee Davis - director of the Center for Environmental Oncology of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute -was a finalist for a National Book Award for "When Smoke Ran Like Water," her 2002 publication on the links between environment and illness. What's more, Davis' role as lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, alongside former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, led to the group's Nobel Prize in 2007. Seems fitting in this town of winter inversions, Davis will speak on the topic: "The Air We Breathe." Nov. 7 at 7 p.m., Main Library Auditorium, 210 E. 400 South, Salt Lake City; 801- 524-8200; www.slcpl.lib.ut.us. Simulcast on KCPW 88.3 FM.

Don't miss this sister act

Movie » With a sharply observant script by Jenny Lumet, "Rachel Getting Married" is an event worth attending. Director Jonathan Demme (in his best work since "The Silence of the Lambs") draws on his background as a documentarian to shoot the movie in a fluid up-close-and-personal manner, with long loose takes that are reminiscent of a Robert Altman movie. Among moments of humor and heartbreaking beauty, the twinned performances of Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel) and Anne Hathaway (her sister Kym) shine. With simple gestures and little unnecessary exposition, they convincingly portray sisters with a deep and troubled history. R for language and brief sexuality; playing at Broadway Centre Cinemas.
