In addition to its offerings of gorgeous paintings, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts offers a range of supporting activities. First is a series of 30-minute mini-lectures throughout the exhibit's run. Today, Anne Jamison, assistant professor in the department of English, speaks on the nexus between the sister arts of literature and visual art with "Baudelaire and Modern Painting." On Aug. 9 the museum screens the film "Cabaret," followed by a lecture/discussion with curator Donna Poulton, and on Aug. 10, Joan Hoffman delivers a talk on the act of plein-air painting, which suffuses the "Monet to Picasso" exhibit. For a deeper discussions of art, adults are invited to enroll in an art-history class that meets at the UMFA every day this week.

Quilt talks
In conjunction with its 35th annual quilt exhibition, the Springville Museum of Art offers "Quilt Trunk Shows," where visitors have a chance to meet the quiltmakers.

Watercolor for kids
Art at the Main, an educational program at the main branch of the Salt Lake City Library, offers two free watercolor classes for children ages 6-12.

Ruminate this, bird man
Jared Gillett earned a master's degree from School of Design in New York City in 2003 and holds a BFA in illustration from Utah State University. Some 50 of his works are on display in his first solo show - "People, Birds and Ruminants" - with the subject matter reflecting, in part, his obsession with the birds at Tracy Aviary.
