Lava Hot Springs—the resort community located in southeastern Idaho—is often known and lauded for its collection of clear, odorless geothermal hot spring pools, which range between 102 and 112 degrees and each provide a warm, relaxing and therapeutic gathering place for all ages.

However, there's much more to this picturesque city than its hot pools, and travelers who visit Lava Hot Springs will find a variety of thrilling, entertaining and calming activities that they can partake in throughout the week. From golfing to zip lining, shopping to river tubing, the recreation possibilities available in Lava Hot Springs make it an excellent getaway for Spring, which is the perfect time to visit and avoid the summer crowds.

Located midway between Salt Lake City and Yellowstone National Park and nestled in the Portneuf Range, Lava Hot Springs is centered around the Portneuf River, which was named "America's Best River for Tubing" in USA Today's 10 Best Reader's Choice Awards in 2016. Rent a tube from one of several local merchants and float through town on a fast-paced, rapid-filled stretch of water. The river also offers areas for fishing right outside of town.

Visitors can also visit the Indoor Aquatic Center, which is open year-round and includes a 25-yard pool, diving board and AquaClimb Wall. This spot, together with the Portneuf River and Lava Hot Springs' Olympic Swimming Complex (which is open from Memorial Day until Labor Day), offers a variety of water-based recreation options.

If you're interested in an exercise that doesn't involve water, take a trip to the Dempsey Ridge Golf Course. This nine-hole course offers scenic, well-tended greens and regularly hosts family and tournament events. Learn how to play golf from scratch or simply clean up your swing with on-site instruction that you can schedule ahead of time. You can also take part in a fun, free round of disc golf at two locations in town: near the Olympic Swimming Complex or at the Lions Park. Frisbees are available for purchase from a variety of stores in town.

Thrill seekers will enjoy time spent at the Lava Zipline Adventure, which offers several thousand feet of zip lining on steel cables located high above the city as well as a ropes course. The views available at this venue, as well as on the various hiking and biking trails located around the city, allow to you enjoy the full scope of nature's beauty.

After time spent outdoors—or anytime—enjoy a relaxing massage or spa day at several locales all located just steps from downtown. Self-care is an important activity in Lava Hot Springs, which hosts a Wellness Festival annually in the Spring.

In addition to all of the aforementioned activities, visitors can enjoy karaoke, bingo, scenic wagon rides at Baker Ranch, a game of horseshoes or mini-golf and a trip to the South Bannock County Historical Museum. Local gift shops provide charming shopping experiences, and fine and casual dining experiences are all conveniently dotted throughout the town.

Lava Hot Springs is located fewer than 2.5 hours from Salt Lake City. To get there, take Interstate 15 to Exit 47-US 30 E and travel east on 30E for 11.2 miles. For more information about lodging, dining and upcoming events, visit lavahotsprings.org or call (208) 776-5500 or (800) 423-8597.
