Iditarod racer talk
Sue Morgan, a Utah State University geologist who competed in and completed the 2008 Iditarod dog sled race, will speak at the Edith Bowen Laboratory School Auditorium on the USU campus Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The event is free to the public. Morgan completed the famous 1,117-mile winter race in 14 days, 31 minutes and 30 seconds. She will share photos from her adventure, show the sled she used and introduce the audience to some of the canine members of her team. The auditorium is at approximately 1000 East and 700 North in Logan.
Birding trip
Great Salt Lake Audubon is holding a birding walk on the Mormon Trail near Mountain Dell Canyon Wednesday. Kathy Coleman will lead the walk with a 7:30 a.m. departure from the Salt Lake REI store, 3285 E. 3300 South. Call Kathy at 801-944-5773 if you plan on going.
Free REI clinics
Learn about flying mammals during the "A Night With Bats" presentation Tuesday at the Salt Lake store, 3285 E. 3300 South, in East Millcreek. Kimberly Hersey, a sensitive-species biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, will review the natural history of bats and review local species and conservation efforts starting at 7 p.m.
Backpacking experts from REI will lead a "Backpacking Skills For Youth" clinic May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake store. Learn the ins and outs of gear essentials and Leave No Trace ethics. Families, youth groups and scout troops are encouraged to attend.
Kari Murray, a local mountain biking enthusiast, will lead a "Mountain Biking for Women" clinic May 22 at 7 p.m. at the Sandy store, 230 W. 10600 South. The clinic is geared toward women-specific mountain biking and will cover the basics of biking, maintenance, clothing, nutrition and local trails and events.
