Layton football

Give the Lancers credit: This is a team that gets it done in crunch time. Layton easily could be 3-2 right now if it didn't have heart or intestinal fortitude. Instead, because they are resilient, the Lancers sit at 4-1. Without LaVaughn Jackson and Karl Williams on offense, Layton squeaked out a 13-7 win over Davis on Friday. That's why this team is ranked No. 2 in the Tribune Power Rankings.

Viewmont football

The Vikings, after disappointing early on, have rebounded and are 2-0 in the league with a big win over Syracuse two weeks ago. Viewmont is small, but quick and a good hitting team. Not sure if this team has enough to challenge the upper rung of the Region, but the Vikes have shown enough to make me feel good enough about their playoff hopes.

Davis football

The Darts had every chance, every opportunity, to win a huge one against Layton. But penalties, and the inability to convert in the redzone resulted in a loss to the Lancers. On the bright side, Davis has one of the three best defenses I've seen so far this season. The Darts fly to the football, they have game changers at all three levels and they cause turnovers. James Cowser may be the best defensive lineman in the state. He's so strong and quick that he's nearly unblockable by one guy.

Clearfield football

The Falcons are struggling, but in their defense they have played an absolutely brutal schedule. Cottonwood. Davis. Viewmont. Bountiful. All of those teams are playoff bound and a few of them will make quite a bit of noise. That's a huge reason Clearfield is 1-4. It doesn't let up, either. Syracuse, Layton and Northridge are next on the schedule. It makes me wonder who the Falcons ticked off.

Layton volleyball

At this point, the Lancers are the team to beat in Region 1. Layton has beaten its first three region opponents - Davis, Syracuse and Viewmont - in three games.

The Lancers are being led by middle blocker Kathryn LeCheminant. She had nine kills and eight blocks against Viewmont. She splits duties with sophomore Mariah Katoa, who had nine kills against the Vikings.

Fremont volleyball

Fremont has experienced some ups and downs in the past couple of weeks. The Silver Wolves beat some of the best teams in Class 5A in Lone Peak and Brighton in the Lone Peak tournament a week ago. They were also very competitive with the top-ranked Pleasant Grove Vikings.

But, in region, Fremont has lost to Davis and Northridge.
