Here are some things you can dress up as for Halloween if you're a white person:

A stick figure

A character from Labyrinth

Sexy Ben Franklin

And here is one thing you cannot do: put on blackface.

Apparently Utah native Julianne Hough forgot that most basic of all Halloween lessons when she decided to dress up as Crazy Eyes, a character from the hit new Netflix show "Orange is the New Black."

Hough — who is famous for appearing on both Dancing with the Stars and the arm of modern day Dorian Gray, Ryan Seacrestdonned the costume Oct. 25 for a party she attended with an "Orange is the New Black" -themed group. She later posted pictures of her costume to photo-sharing site Instagram.

Naturally, the "costume" prompted a rapid backlash, with many people on Twitter making a point that in no way should be surprising in 2013: blackface is actually quite offensive. Hough then removed the photos and apologized Saturday via Twitter, saying she never meant to offend anyone, though of course the best way to not offend people is to not do offensive things.

Hough has made headlines in her native state over the years as her star has risen in the show biz world. In addition to dancing with C-listers, she appeared in the remake of "Footloose" in 2011. She also appeared in "Safe Haven" as well as "Rock of Ages" with Tom Cruise.
