Before May 2012, the illustrations of Blain Hefner graced the pages of The Salt Lake Tribune, winning awards and delighting readers with Hefner's savvy interpretations of pop-culture icons.

Journalism's loss is the art world's gain. Hefner mounts his first solo art show, "Monsters, Movies & The Dude," at the I.J. & Jeanné Wagner Jewish Community Center, 2 N. Medical Drive, Salt Lake City.

The show highlights Hefner's love of movie and TV icons. For Halloween, he has created new portrait studies of the classic Universal and Hammer Films monsters, as well as characters from "Young Frankenstein." He also has created retro movie posters of his favorite horror movies.

Other icons represented include Indiana Jones, "Doctor Who," "The Avengers," "Star Wars," "Star Trek" and the "Harry Potter" series. The exhibit runs Oct. 1 through 30 in the JCC's second-floor gallery.
