“Wicked’s” massive dragon time-clock, which tour insiders call “Ozwald,” flew above the Capitol Theatre stage on Tuesday, as some 60 local stagehands joined tour roadies to load in sets and scenery for the touring musical. The $14 million show begins its third run in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, July 9.
Along with wardrobe, makeup and wig artists, it takes about 100 people and 30 hours to set the show, says Steve Quinn, who joined the national tour 9 ½ years ago, shortly after its launch. “What’s nice about it is the set is going to look enormous” in the intimate space of the Capitol Theatre, Quinn says. “I think the show plays terrifically here.”
On Wednesday, a sound check is scheduled, plus a backstage orientation for actors to check out where they’ll make quick changes in the stage wings. The tour has a cast of 30, including three performers from Utah.
The show plays through Aug. 24 at the historic downtown theater, 50 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City. Tickets, $55-$175, are available at 801-355-2787 or arttix.org. The tour offers a day-of drawing for a pair of $25 orchestra seats; bring cash and sign up at the theater box office 2 ½ hours before showtime.
