Uinta dials up 801 Pilsner to debut at Utah Arts Festival

The featured beer for the 2014 Utah Arts Festival pays tribute to one of Utah's most notable numbers: the 801 area code.

The new 801 Pilsner, produced by Uinta Brewing Company, will make its debut during the annual event, June 26-29 in downtown Salt Lake City. It will be available on draft throughout the festival grounds and in cans inside the special Uinta patio.

At 4 percent alcohol by volume (that's 3.2 percent by weight), 801 Pilsner is "a light-bodied and refreshing pilsner that is quaffable and smooth," said Uinta owner Will Hamill in a news release.

After the arts festival, beer drinkers can find 801 Pilsner in area grocery stores beginning the first week of July. A 12-pack will cost $12.99-$13.99.

Uinta pays subtle tribute to Utah's other area codes of 435 and 385 on the aluminum can packaging, but the 21-year-old company decided to embrace the 801 brand name, which historically has been the area code that encompassed all of Utah.

Uinta also is calling the 801 Pilsner its "Community Builder" brand and will donate proceeds to local nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits will alternate and the organization's logo will be incorporated into the 801 packaging, officials said.,

The Utah Avalanche Center, which provides backcountry riders with the tools and information to stay safe, is 801's first partner.

"Community involvement is a large component of Uinta's DNA and we are eager to spread neighborhood engagement and camaraderie through the 801 brand," Hamill said.

Utahns can nominate a future 801 nonprofit recipient on the Uinta Brewing Co. website beginning in July.
