Merle Haggard

Show of the week • In his 50-plus years in music, Merle Haggard has been called a country singer and a folk singer. He’s been called a pioneer (along with Buck Owens) of the “Bakersfield sound” in the 1950s. He’s been called part of the “outlaw country” movement of the 1970s, with the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. He’s been called “the Okie from Muskogee,” after his declarative 1968 hit. Since 1994, he’s been called a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and in 2010 a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. But if you call him Mr. Haggard, with respect, that will do just fine.
