Kolache Festival in Heber City
Main Street Kolaches in Heber City will hold a party to celebrate the opening of its renovated drive-thru and the addition of a coffee and “dirty” drink (sodas mixed with flavorings) menu. Kolaches, which originated in the Czech Republic, are made with a sweet, yeasty egg dough and filled with sweet and savory ingredients. In October, sisters Sierra McCleve and Jessica Sonderegger opened Main Street Kolaches in a former frozen-yogurt shop on Heber City’s Main Street. Their festival includes an 8 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony where guests can enjoy free samples of kolaches and smoothies. Food and drink specials will be available throughout the rest of the day.

Samples and 99-cent churros at Smith’s
Sample guacamole, chorizo, cheese, horchata and other Mexican specialties on Saturday, June 21, at all Smith’s Food & Drug Stores in Utah. The free tasting stations run from noon to 5 p.m. and are part of the store’s “Savor World Flavor: Taste of Mexico” promotion. Stores will host games for coupons and prizes. Customers also can get hot churros for 99 cents every day at 4 p.m. through Tuesday, June 24. Monday, June 23, 7:30 p.m. • A free screening of “Urban Roots,” a thought-provoking documentary about the Detroit residents who have come together to reclaim abandoned lots and grow their own food. Tuesday, June 24, 6 p.m. • Learn chicken-keeping basics from area experts. Workshop takes place at the Wasatch Community Gardens Grateful Tomato Garden, 800 S. 600 East, Salt Lake City. Admission is $10.
Saturday, June 28, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. • The Urban Garden and Farm Tour, a self-guided look at some of the interesting, creative and inspiring backyards, urban homesteads and community gardens in Salt Lake County. Tour costs $10 per person or $20 for groups of two to six people. A condensed tour accessible by bike also is available for $5 per person or $10 for groups.

Free Moose Tracks ice cream
Go get a free scoop of Moose Tracks ice cream next week and not only will you satisfy your sweet tooth, you’ll help earn money for The Salvation Army’s children’s program. Park City wine course wins video awards
The Culinary Wine Institute in Park City has received two more media awards for its “Foundations in Wine – Level One” video course. The four-part course was produced by Utah-based Market Vision Media and was taught by Kirsten Fox, founder and CEO of the institute. The video course received a gold medal from Omni Intermedia Awards, which recognizes productions that “engage, empower and enlighten”; and a silver from Creativity International Awards, which recognizes design, usability and execution. In January, the culinary institute received a gold from the Aurora Awards, an international competition that recognizes excellence in the film and video industries.
