Lost hiking couple found unhurt in Little Cottonwood Canyon
It was, for two lost Little Cottonwod Canyon hikers, a case of a ridge too far.
Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen said it apparently was a decision by a 20-year-old man and his 19-year-old female companion to "see what was over that next ridge" that got them turned around and in trouble Sunday night.
Family members called 911 to report the couple were overdue from a hike on the Red Pine Trail, and by 7 p.m. four Salt Lake County Search and Rescue teams were scouring the general area of the White Pine Trailhead.
Before the battery on the couple's cellphone died, GPS tracking got crews into the general area where they were lost.
"We didn't have any air support this time, so it was a situation where [searchers] were out there yelling and waiting for them to yell back," Hansen said Monday.
About 11 p.m., the shouts were answered and the couple were located and led down the mountain. Neither was injured.
