On Friday afternoon, the Utah Jazz found their new head coach, agreeing to terms with Atlanta Hawks assistant Quin Snyder.

By Friday evening, thoughts and congratulatory messages were pouring in.

Former Jazz forward Paul Millsap tweeted, “Congratulations to Quin Snyder for being named head coach of the @utahjazz!!! The Jazz are getting a great coach and person.”

Millsap, who left the organization last summer, went on to have a career year with the Hawks with Snyder as one of his coaches.

“We are extremely happy for Quin and his family,” Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer said in a statement. “He played an instrumental role within our coaching staff and team. This is a great opportunity for him, and we wish him the best.”

Twitter reaction from Jazz fans was overwhelmingly positive, with many simply happy that his name isn’t Jim Boylen, the former Utah Utes coach. Many like Snyder’s youth, his offensive background and his extensive pedigree under legendary coaches such as Gregg Popovich.

One of the players Snyder worked with, former Jazz forward DeMarre Carroll, attributed his best season as a pro to Snyder. Like Millsap, Carroll left the Jazz last summer to sign with Atlanta. Carroll became a starter and a mainstay and had a breakout year for a playoff team.

“I have to give a shoutout to coach Quin [Snyder],” Carroll said in his exit interview. “This is the first year a coach really worked with me on my footwork, my shot, spent time with me. That’s a credit to coach Quin. That shows me that he cares about me as a person, cares about my career.”

Snyder comes to the Jazz in what will be his first NBA head coaching opportunity. He coached on the collegiate level at Missouri, but resigned amid scandal. From there, Snyder rebuilt his career, coaching in the NBA Developmental League, and landing assistant jobs with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Hawks.

“Big shoutout to my coach and friend Quin Snyder for getting the Jazz job,” Carroll said on Twitter. “#jazznation, you all have gotten a great COACH…trust me.”
