Justin Thomas did the pitching, Efren Navarro did the hitting and the Bees did the winning Friday night.

Thomas allowed one run and scattered seven hits over six innings and Navarro drove in a pair of runs to lead Salt Lake to a 3-1 victory over Sacramento at Smith's Ballpark.

Thomas improved to 3-6 with one of his best outings of the season.

"He did a great job for us," manager Keith Johnson said. "His pitch count got a little high. He got himself into some deep counts. But when he needed to make pitches, he did a good job of it. ... He competed his behind off."

The Bees opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out, J.B. Shuck singled. He went to third when Luis Jimenez doubled into the left field corner and scored on Navarro's infield out.

Salt Lake extended its lead to 2-0 in the second.

Zach Borenstein singled and went to third when Sacramento starter Matt Buschmann's pick-off attempt sailed into the Bees' bullpen down the right field line. Borenstein scored on John Hester's one-out sacrifice fly.

Navarro bumped Salt Lake's lead to 3-0 with a long solo home run to right in the third, although the River Cats countered in the fifth.

Ryan Ortiz, the No. 9 batter in the Sacramento batting order, walked with one out. He went to second on Nick Buss' infield out and scored when Andy Parrino lined a single to right center.

Thomas avoided any more damage, however, when Daric Barton grounded out to retire the side. —
