Southern Utah University’s Kayla Kovar finished second in the women’s hammer throw at the NCAA West Preliminary meet on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., qualifying for a third event at this year’s national championships.

Kovar made a throw of 205 feet, 2 inches, finishing second behind Colorado’s Emily Hunsucker (210-1).

Kovar’s throw was well short of her season best (216-9), which set the school record. Kovar, a senior from Ridgecrest, Calif., qualified for the NCAA finals in each of the events she entered, finishing 10th in the shot put on Thursday and 10th in the discus on Friday. The NCAA championships are June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

Utah State finished 14th in the men’s 400-meter relay with Parker Bluth, Nic Bowens, Silas Pimentel and Jacob Bautista Jr. teaming up for a time of 40.15 seconds. The Aggies finished two places short of qualifying for nationals.

Bowens was the top individual finisher for Utah State, taking 15th in the 200 quarterfinals in 20.85.

Utah’s Aoife Hickey (187-3) placed 14th in the women’s hammer throw.

Utah State’s Melanie Heslop finished 24th with a heave of 180-9.
