A large water main in downtown Salt Lake City broke Friday afternoon, forcing the closure of several blocks for the Memorial Day weekend.

The main erupted, flooding 1300 South, about 2:03 p.m.

No injuries were reported, but the break forced fire and law enforcement to close the road from about 300 West to 700 West, as well as the 1300 South on and off ramps from Interstate 15.

The Utah Department of Transportation expects those blocks to remain closed for the next few days. In a tweet, the department encouraged commuters to use Interstate 80 to State Street, 2100 South or 900 West to reach the area around Smith's Ballpark, considering there are games scheduled all weekend.

The cause of the break was not immediately clear, said Jasen Asay, spokesman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department. The water department is investigating the incident.
