10 things to do around S.L. City during Memorial Day Weekend

While a record number of people are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, plenty of Utahns will be enjoying the three-day break at home. When you're not visiting loved ones' graves or honoring those who have served their country, here is a (non-exhaustive) list of some activities to do around Wasatch Front:

Salt Lake County

Natural History Museum of Utah • If you haven't yet seen the traveling Chocolate: The Exhibition, this is one of the last weekends to do so. And the $1 chocolate tasting is worth the cost. Also, check out the newest Tyrannosaur, Lytrhonax argestes. If it's nice out, walk the nearby Bonneville Shoreline Trail.

Hours • Daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesdays 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Admission • Adults: $11; seniors and youths (13-24): $9; and children (3-12): $8. Free for museum members, University of Utah students, staff and faculty with ID; and children 2 and younger.

Utah's Hogle Zoo

Come check out the return of lions to Utah, as part of theAfrican Savanna area is now open. There's also plenty of other creatures: elephants, polar bears and orangutans, oh my!

Hours • Gate: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Grounds: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tracy Aviary

Check out the diversity of winged beasts living at Liberty Park. For $3 more, you can feed the pelicans or the Sun Conures. After your visit, hang out at the park.

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium

The aquarium's new digs are worth checking out, especially now that nearly all the tanks are filled with everything from sharks to sting rays to jellyfish. Visits during Memorial Day weekend are the same price as usual, but you do need to select a time to go. Visit this website to buy your tickets.

Wheeler Historic Farm

The park offers lots to do, from wagon rides to a farmer's market to cow milking.

Location • 6351 South 900 East, Murray

Hours • Dawn to dusk

Admission • Free, but activities cost money:

Wagon Rides (ages 2 and up, weather Permitting) • $2

Historic Farm House Tours (Adult) • $4

Historic Farm House Tours (age 3-12) • $2

Cow Milking (spectator and participant) • $1

Discovery Gateway

The children-centric museum just opened its Bob the Builder exhibit for the youngsters, and there are plenty of activities for kids of all ages.

Location • 444 W. 100 South

Hours • Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday-Saturday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday: noon to 6 p.m.

Admission • General: $8.50; Senior (65+): $6

Summit County

Utah Olympic Park

Ride the summer bobsleds, fly along a zipline or take a ride on the alpine slide.

Location • 444 W. 100 South

Hours • Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday-Saturday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday: noon to 6 p.m.

Admission • You can pay $65 for an all-day pass for all activities except the bobsled, or pay $200 for a summer season pass that excludes the bobsled. Individual tickets are also available:

Bobsled • $75

Ziplines • $15 to $20

Alpine slide • $15; $5 for youths

Museum of Natural Curiosity

Explore the rainforest, learn about science through experiments with water, wind, sun and earth, or play with simple machines. Check out the Museum of Ancient Life or the gardens after you're done.

Timpanogos Cave

Check out the stalactites and stalagmites (and don't forget the cave bacon) at this very cool national monument. The paved trail is fairly easy to navigate, and don't forget to bring a sweatshirt as the cave gets pretty chilly.

Location • From Interstate 15, take Exit 284 (Alpine-Highland exit), then turn east on State Highway 92 and proceed 10 miles (16km) up American Fork Canyon to the monument.

Hours • Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. closed Sunday

Admission • Adults (age 16 and older): $8; Junior (age 6-15): $6; Child (age 3-5): $4; Infant (age 0-2): Free (but still requires a ticket)

Davis County

Antelope Island

It may be a little buggy out on the island right now, but it's one of the few times you'll get to see bison surrounded by greenery. You can also take horseback or bicycle rides or take a picnic and explore the historic buildings out there.

Hours • 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Admission • $10 per vehicle up to 8 people; senior entrance fee (Utah residents over 62 of age): $5 per vehicle up to 8 people; bicycles and pedestrians: $3 per person
