I’ve been reading responses to Utah’s new driving law that went into effect this week, where drivers cannot manipulate phones while driving. It’s encouraging to see how many people are for this law and against texting while driving. There are a lot of wise people out there.
For those who say this is a worthless or stupid law, my guess is you haven’t lost a family member or good friend in an accident where the driver was manipulating their phone. You would feel differently if you had.
My friends Dave and Leslee Henson were out for a spring walk a year ago. A 50-year-old woman was texting while driving. She hit a car, pushing it into the Hensons. Dave was killed on impact. Leslee suffered terrible injuries. It’s her family who pushed for and worked with Sen. Steve Urquhart to get this bill passed. You can thank the Hensons for making our roads safer.
It’s too bad we have to have laws like this, that so many aren’t wise enough to just leave their phones alone while driving. The Hensons’ goal is to prevent this kind of tragedy happening to anyone else. How can anyone argue with that?
