Utah high school softball teams sometimes build up traditions of excellence, making them always dangerous come state tournament time.

That’s why Bingham and Taylorsville must be listed among the favorites Tuesday when the Class 5A high school softball tournament opens.

Region 3 champion Bingham, which hosts Granger on Tuesday, captured three straight state titles from 2008 to 2010, and always seems to be in the mix.

Region 2 champion Taylorsville, with Jaycie LeBaron pitching well and a recent win over powerful small school power Manti under its belt, last won a title under coach Rich Kaelin in 2007, but could be in the mix this year. The Warriors open at home against West Jordan.

Other teams to watch include Region 1 champion Layton, Region 4 winner Riverton and defending champion Copper Hills.

The 4A tournament also opens Tuesday with Murray, Clearfield, Box Elder and Spanish Fork entering as favorites based on region championships. Defending state champion Salem Hills will open defense of its crown when it hosts Mountain Crest.

The first two rounds of the double elimination tournaments are held on home sites. Then the two tournaments move to the Valley Softball Complex in Taylorsville May 20-22 where championships will be contested.
