Epic Beer gets canned
Beer from Utah’s Epic Brewery will soon will be available in 12-ounce cans. The canning of Escape to Colorado IPA and Hop Syndrome Pils Lager will begin this week and should be in retail outlets sometime in June, according to co-founder David Cole. He said Epic plans to continue expanding its 12-ounce can selection in the future with other seasonal and unique offerings.
Canning is becoming more popular among craft brewers in the U.S. and Utah because equipment is more affordable and the packaging protects beer from UV light and air, two things that cause “skunky” beer. Cans, which are easier to recycle than glass, also are the preferred choice for those who camp, hike and participate in other outdoor activities.
Cole said Escape to Colorado IPA commemorates the opening of Epic’s second location to Denver last year, while Hop Syndrome Pils Lager was the 2012 and 2013 Silver Medal Session Beer winner at the LA International Beer Competition. Both beers have an alcohol content higher than 4 percent by volume (3.2 percent weight), which means they will be sold at the Epic brewery and in state-owned liquor stores.
Park City brewer moving to Salt Lake County
Shades of Pale Brewing Co., which launched four years ago in Park City, will relocate its production facility to South Salt Lake this summer.
According to co-founders Trent Fargher and Alexandra Ortiz De Fargher, the new brewery will be located near 2100 South and West Temple and will allow Shades of Pale to expand its annual capacity — currently around 1,000 barrels. The brewery also will be able to start producing high-alcohol beers.
Shades of Pale produces four brews that are 4 percent alcohol by volume (3.2 by weight), including Jack Wagon Wheat, Publican Pale Ale, 4-Play Porter and Ready to Fly Amber Ale. The beer is sold in local grocery and convenience stores.
At the new location, the Farghers also plan to have a bottle shop — making it possible for patrons to buy cold beer directly from the brewery — as well as a tap room, gift shop and art gallery.
Shades of Pale’s current facility will close soon, but the Farghers say they are looking for a new Park City location to sell their products.

New ‘Beer-B-Q’ debuts at Food and Wine classic
Explore the world of barbecue and craft beer with chefs from the Waldorf Astoria and Utah brewers during a new “Beer-B-Q” dinner in the mountains. It’s just one of more than a dozen beer and wine classes, tastings and dining events taking place as part of the 10th annual Park City Food & Wine classic, July 9-13. Other events include a “Farm to Barn” dinner, “Slabs and Cabs” meat-and-red-wine luncheon, “It’s a Mary Morning” brunch and “Hair of the Dog” bike ride. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the non-profit People’s Health Clinic, which provides health care for the uninsured in Summit and Wasatch counties.
