Salt Lake Community College graduating class is school's largest
4:30 p.m. Thursday • Salt Lake Community College will graduate the largest class in its history Thursday at the Maverik Center. The 4,218-student class is about 10 percent larger than last year as students who set enrollment records starting in 2009 finish their educations. Utah Valley University also had its largest graduating class this year.
The speaker will be Sekou Andrews, two-time winner of the National Poetry Slam.
Honorary doctorate degrees will go to Jesselie Barlow Anderson, a former SLCC trustee who helped establish a Washington D.C. internship program, and Questar President and CEO Ronald W. Jibson, who has contributed to an SLCC scholarship program that established a student energy grant.
Two members of Utah law enforcement recently killed in the line of duty, Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Cory Blake Wride and Draper police Sgt. Derek Ray Johnson, will be named Distinguished Alumni, along with Salt Lake City Comic Con founder Dan Farr.
The school's 2014 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is associate professor Melissa Helquist and the Teaching Excellence Awards will go to are Bill Tovar, Melissa Tillack and Emily Dibble.
