A 21-year-old man walking in West Valley City was shot in the stomach early Saturday, police said.

Police say an officer patrolling the area around Granger High School, 3580 S. 3600 West, saw a silver car pull up alongside four pedestrians who were walking south on 3600 West at about 12:30 a.m. The car’s occupants appeared to be talking with the group and as the officer passed by the group, he heard shots fired from the vehicle, according to a news release.

The officer tried to catch up to the vehicle, which headed south, but lost sight of it. The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

The car was a late-model silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo or Impala with black rims and a fin on the back. Anyone with information is asked to call the West Valley City Police Department at 801-840-4000.
