A 13-year-old girl from Logan has won Best in Show for the 2014 Utah Junior Duck Stamp Contest.

Zhiwen Xu, of Mount Logan Middle School in Logan, won with a mixed-media portrayal of a male mallard in flight. The piece was created with prisma, airbrush, pastel and gouache.

Judges of the Utah Junior Duck Stamp Contest said Xu’s work “reflected a high level of attention to anatomical detail, creative expression, and use of color,” according to staffers at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, who put on the annual content.

Xu beat out stiff competition from other Utah students from kindergarten through 12th grade. She will be recognized May 10 during an awards ceremony at Bear River Migratory Refuge.

As the Utah winner, Xu’s art will be sent to Washington, D.C., for the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest on April 18, featuring winners from across the nation.
